A time capsule for a child, what goes inside

Read in English

A time capsule is a way to lock a moment so it reaches its addressee many years later. Not magic, not a complicated setup, just a packet of letters, photos, and voice notes that opens on a timer.

If you have a small child, or know one is about to arrive, here is what is worth putting into the capsule.

What to record today for a child at 18

1. The voice of the parents

The voice is the heart of the capsule. Record 3–5 minutes from each parent: who you are, what you love, what the day they were born looked like, what you wish for them when they grow up.

Don't try to «say it right». Speak as you would to yourself. In 18 years, a mother's voice from 2026 is a priceless artefact.

2. A photograph of the parents the day they arrived

Not a polished studio shot. The real photo from the first day. Tired faces and joy in the eyes. This is the context the child steps into when they open the capsule.

3. A letter «why we waited for you»

A simple note, handwritten or typed. What you felt when you found out you were going to be parents. What you feared. What made you happy.

That text is the answer to a question the child never asks aloud, but always wants to hear: «I was wanted».

4. A list of what mattered the year they were born

  • What songs played out of the speakers
  • What the dollar exchange rate was
  • What you watched in the evenings
  • What was hard to buy
  • What relatives argued about

Eighteen years later, all of this is unrecognisable. The list becomes a time machine.

5. One piece of advice from each family member

Grandmother, grandfather, an aunt, an uncle, a family friend. Each writes one sentence or a short audio. Not a school-teacher lecture, but what the person actually believes is important.

By 18, some of these people will already be gone. Their words are the ones that arrive.

6. The most common sound of the home

Record the background noise. The kitchen, the kettle, the cat, grandmother's TV, the door creaking. Not text, not a photo. Eighteen years later the child will hear that sound and recognise the home.

Practical setup

  • Put everything in one folder or one timer-locked page.
  • Make a backup with another person, not just on your phone.
  • Set a reminder a year from now: «have I opened the capsule? does anything need adding?»

The point

A capsule is not about the perfect contents. It is about an 18-year-old opening it and feeling: «I was known, I was wanted, I was loved by these specific people in this specific moment».

Make it today. It will not be perfect. Good enough is enough.
